Diy Scrabble Letters

BLOG

21 Feb

Scrabble was a game I loved as a child. And I am happy to say, I still love it even as an adult. It doesn’t get my heart rate up like a good old game of hopscotch or double dutch jump rope, like back when I was 8 years old but it still brings back happy memories that warm my heart. With this easy DIY scrabble Letters craft, I can feel that warmth every time I write out something as simple as, “YOUNG AT HEART.”

You will love displaying your scrabble letters on your own DIY Scrabble letter board

DIY Scrabble Letters

SUPPLIES NEED TO MAKE YOUR DIY SCRABBLE LETTERS:

  • 5 gallon paint sticks* (Creates thicker letters – use a miter saw to cut)
  • 1 Gallon Paint sticks* (Creates thinner letters – use a hobby saw to cut)
  • Miter saw or Hobby saw
  • Burnt Umber acrylic paint
  • Ink pad
  • Letter Stamps – Amazon 30 wood block rubber stamps
  • Baby wipe
  • Plastic glove (optional)
  • Cutting mat board (optional)

Steps for Making Scrabble Letters:

Depending on how precise you want to be with your letters, you can use Google to determine the exact number of scrabble letters to tell you how many A’s, B’s, C’s you will need, along with the appropriate number counts for each letter. Or you can just make the exact letters you want for a specific phrase. Whole alphabet, scrabble set, specific phrase. You decide how many tiles you want to make. It is up to you!

Step 1 – Lay paint sticks out flat on a covered surface.

Step 2 – With gloves on, apply a small amount of Burnt Umber paint to a baby wipe. Softly rub along the paint sticks to lightly cover the wood – giving it that stained look. Do this on both sides of the paint sticks. (You will not use the curved edge of the paint stick.)

Step 3 – Place sticks on a cutting mat board to draw lines for measuring. *For thicker wood, measure your letter tiles to be about 1 inches long. For thinner wood, about 2 inch long. Use a ruler/flat edge to help draw your lines.

Step 4 – With your letter stamps, carefully place one letter on each 1-2 inch measured square.  Be careful not to rub the edges of stamps onto your stained paint sticks. If you don’t have letter stamps, don’t stress. That’s ok – use your cricut to place vinyls on for letters instead. Remember, do what works for you. With a sharpie, write in tiny numbers in bottom corners to complete the scrabble look.

Step 5 – Start cutting to create your DIY Scrabble Letters. Take it to the miter saw and cut on your lines. Hobby saw will work as well, for thinner paint sticks. Remember to give a good sanding to each side to smooth out the edges.

Step 6 – The hardest part is figuring out what phrase you want to spell out with your new DIY Scrabble Letters. Don’t worry. We have some great ideas.  “YOUNG AT HEART” or “BEE INSPIRED.”

Make sure to check out how we used them here !
